Raw
Food contact Approved
Recommendation: not recommended for regular contact with food without proper protection. Suitable only for temporary use. Clean with warm water and mild detergent, then dry immediately.
Water resistance: Very low. Raw wood absorbs moisture easily and is sensitive to prolonged contact with water.
Stain resistance: Very low. The surface readily absorbs food stains and liquids.
UV resistance: Low. Prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause discoloration.
Raised grain: Likely to occur after the first contact with water. This is a natural effect and usually stabilizes after initial use.
Odor: Natural wood smell may be noticeable at first.

Vegetable oil
Food contact Approved
Recommendation: Not recommended for regular use. Suitable for cutting boards only as a temporary solution when paraffin oil is not available. It does not provide long-term water resistance, so prolonged exposure to moisture may cause damage. Clean the board with warm water and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly after each use. Over time, if not properly oiled, it may develop an unpleasant odor.
Stain resistance: Limited. Without proper oiling, the surface may absorb food stains (e.g. from vegetables or spices).
UV resistance: Low. Prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause discoloration of the wood.
Raised grain: May occur after the first contact with water. This is a natural process and does not usually recur with subsequent use. (more about rising fibers effect...)
Odor: A slight natural odor may be noticeable initially. With prolonged use and moisture exposure, an unpleasant smell may develop if the board is not properly oiled and dried.
Paraffin oil
Food contact Approved
Recommendation: Recommended for regular use on wooden cutting boards. Provides effective water protection when applied regularly. Apply a thin layer of paraffin oil to a clean, dry surface and allow it to absorb. Wipe off excess oil after several minutes. Reapply periodically, especially after washing.
Water resistance: Good. Paraffin oil reduces water absorption but does not make the wood fully waterproof.
Stain resistance: Improved. Regular oiling helps limit absorption of food stains.
UV resistance: Not applicable. Paraffin oil does not provide UV protection.
Raised grain: May occur after the first contact with water before oiling. Proper oil treatment minimizes this effect. (more about rising fibers effect...)
Odor: Odorless and neutral. Does not develop unpleasant smells when used and maintained correctly.

Hard wax
Food contact Approved
Recommendation: Hard wax finish is recommended for decorative wooden items, trays, furniture elements, and table or countertop surfaces where improved surface protection and aesthetic appearance are required.
For wooden cutting boards and food-contact surfaces, paraffin oil is sufficient and recommended, as it allows easy maintenance and regular re-oiling.
Water resistance: Moderate. Hard wax limits water absorption but prolonged exposure to moisture should be avoided.
Stain resistance: Moderate. The waxed surface reduces staining, but strong pigments may still leave marks if not removed promptly.
UV resistance: Good. The hard wax finish provides sufficient protection for normal indoor use. No significant discoloration occurs under standard lighting conditions.
Raised grain: Minimal. Hard wax stabilizes the surface and reduces fiber raising after contact with moisture.
Odor: Neutral after curing. A slight natural wax smell may be noticeable initially but disappears with use.
Examples of hard wax wood finish
Hard wax with color
Food contact Approved if last coating is transparent
Recommendation: Recommended for decorative wooden products, trays, furniture elements, countertops, and display items where color consistency and a natural look are desired.
Water resistance: Moderate. Hardwax oil reduces water absorption, but prolonged exposure to moisture should be avoided.
Stain resistance: Moderate. The treated surface limits staining, though strong pigments may leave marks if not removed promptly.
UV resistance: Good. Pigmented hardwax oil provides adequate UV protection for normal indoor use and helps stabilize color.
Raised grain: Minimal. The oil-wax combination stabilizes the surface and reduces fiber raising after contact with moisture.
Odor: Neutral. A slight natural oil/wax smell may be noticeable initially but disappears with use.

Lacquer (transparent varnish)
Food contact not aprooved
Recommendation: Recommended for decorative wooden products, trays, table accessories, menu holders, and utility items where easy cleaning and long-term surface protection are required. Not recommended for cutting boards or surfaces intended for knife use, as the lacquer layer may be damaged.
Cleaning: Clean with a damp cloth; do not soak or expose to prolonged moisture.
Water resistance: Moderate. Hard wax limits water absorption but prolonged exposure to moisture should be avoided.
Stain resistance: Moderate. The waxed surface reduces staining, but strong pigments may still leave marks if not removed promptly.
UV resistance: Good. Clear lacquer provides sufficient protection for normal indoor use and reduces discoloration.
Raised grain: None. The sealed surface prevents fiber raising after contact with moisture.
Odor: Neutral. No unpleasant odor during normal use.
Examples of transparent varnish wood finish
Stain + lacquer finish
Food contact not aprooved
Recommendation: Recommended for decorative trays, serving trays, and wooden accessories where color consistency is required and occasional contact with water is expected.
Cleaning: Clean with a damp cloth; do not soak or expose to prolonged moisture.
Water resistance: Good. The lacquer topcoat protects the stained wood from moisture during normal use.
Stain resistance: Good. The sealed surface prevents absorption of liquids and food pigments.
UV resistance: Good. The lacquer layer helps stabilize color and limits discoloration under indoor lighting.
Raised grain: None. The lacquered surface fully seals the wood fibers.
Odor: Neutral after curing. No unpleasant odor during normal use.

Color lacquer (polyurethane)
Food contact not aprooved
Recommendation: suitable for intensive use and decorative applications. Provides a hard, durable, and fully sealed surface with high resistance to mechanical wear. Recommended for decorative wooden products, furniture elements, trays, menu holders, displays, and items exposed to frequent handling or moisture. Not recommended for cutting boards or surfaces intended for direct food cutting.
Cleaning: Clean with a damp cloth; do not soak or expose to prolonged moisture.
Water resistance: Very good. The polyurethane coating effectively protects the wood from moisture. Only for indoor use.
Stain resistance: Very good. The non-porous surface prevents absorption of liquids and pigments.
UV resistance: Good. The coating provides sufficient protection for normal indoor use and helps maintain color stability.
Raised grain: None. The fully sealed surface prevents fiber raising.
Odor: Neutral after curing. No unpleasant odor during normal use.
